The
Village Shops before it became Liberty Square. |
|
The transformation of Liberty Square began in the the
Fall of 2006 when the new owners of what had been The
Village Shops of Egg Harbor began an exhaustive—and
exhausting—rethinking and remodeling of the entire 10-year-old
complex. Owners Richard and Pamela Wegner of Jacksonport
and Christopher J. Anderson of Baileys Harbor purchased
the property and brought together a team of local Wisconsin
talent to revitalize the 14,000 square foot commercial
building. The complex underwent a major transformation
during the winter of 2006 and emerged, phoenix-like,
as the newly renovated restaurant and retail center
known today as Liberty Square.
When renovations were complete, Liberty Square was transformed
into one restaurant,
a private
dining/banquet facility, nine retail
shops and a number of apartments on the second floor
of the complex. What had once been a diner and milk
shake parlor was transformed into The
Bistro, a stylish, high quality contemporary restaurant
serving delicious fresh food at affordable prices. Today,
sophisticated hand-painted murals by Door County artist
Tim Nygren, comfortable seating and lots of natural
lighting make The Bistro a relaxing and inviting place
to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. A series of nine
retail boutiques
was constructed inside the building and interconnected,
making it easy for Liberty Square visitors to stroll
leisurely from one inviting shop environment to the
next without concern for the outdoor weather. The
Board Room at Liberty Square was conceived and executed
as a beautiful private dining room/banqueting space
that also is the site of a number of special events
and dinners throughout the year.

Not content to stop with
these radical changes to the interior, the Liberty Square
design team also called for extensive beautification
of the exterior space and grounds, especially given
Liberty Square’s “gateway” presence at the southern
end of Egg Harbor. The combination of new trees and
shrubs, spiffy new awnings and signage, comfortable
porch rockers and, of course, ever-changing plantings
of beautiful flowers all season long makes for a warm
front-door greeting to all Door County visitors and
shoppers.
The name "Liberty Square" was chosen to reflect the new owners'
entrepreneurial and uniquely American enthusiasm for their ambitious
business venture. And besides, what other name could be a better match
for the row of American flags that proudly hang on the facade and on the
sides of Liberty Square?
The renovation and revisioning of Liberty Square has
beautified and strengthened the business landscape of
Egg Harbor. Just as important, Liberty Square has become
a leader in community involvement, bringing together
Door County residents and visitors through sponsorship
of such events as lifelong
learning programs, The Board Room Seminars, artist
in residency programs and other special events. Liberty
Square believes it has a responsibility to support the
quality of life in Door County and manifests its commitment
through ongoing contributions to and support of charitable
not-for-profit organizations and programs throughout
the Door County peninsula. |
